How Perfume, Eau de Cologne, and Eau de Toilette Are Different?

We all know that buying a signature perfume is not an easy job. You just do not have to pick the specific fragrance, but you also have to choose the form of fragrance. Nowadays, fragrances are available in different forms such as Cologne, eau de toilette, and parfum.

If you want to make the right selection, then you should start to know how these are different from each other. The perfume and cologne are different from each other based on the concentration level of perfume oil. The ‘toilette’ and ‘cologne’ also indicated the strength and durability of the fragrance.

The fragrance bottle you purchase from the market is based on the “perfume essence.” It is the main ingredient of the perfume, cologne, or toilette that generates an amazing smell. The perfume essence can be a combination of animal extracts, synthetic fragrances, and essential oils.

The base perfume essence is not attractive by itself because it is available in extremely concentrated form. Therefore, it is required to dilute the base perfume by adding in water and alcohol. In diluted form, the perfume essence starts smelling good.

The fragrances are available in different forms and they can be broadly categorized into four main groups which are described below:

The perfume which is available in the retail store is not the pure form of perfume. But it is a diluted form of perfume that is available in the market. The perfume with the highest concentration level which is available in the market is very much expensive. The perfume is a little bit oily and usually comprises the 15 to 40 pure perfume essence.

The concentrated perfume is sold as stopper bottles and not in the form of a spray bottle. The quality of the perfume is not solely based on the concentration of the pure fragrance essence. It is already explained that some essential oils do not produce good fragrances in concentrated form such as real musk, ambergris, etc.

These types of perfumes are very expensive and not attractive in their pure form. Even a single drop will raise the price of perfume. But, a single drop of real musk and ambergris is enough and you may not want more than that. With the increasing concentration of these essential oils, they will start smelling bad.

Eau de Perfume/Parfum:

It is composed of a similar type of perfume essence but in low concentration. In Eau de Perfume, essential oils are added in small amounts with alcohol and water. It means that the fragrance produced by the Eau de Perfume is very light and will not last for long.

Most people prefer these types of fragrances because they do not want strong fragrances. Due to the low concentration of essential oils, the Eau de parfum spray is much cheaper. Usually, the Eau de perfume comprises 10 to 20 percent of essence oil concentration. The Eau de perfume is available in spray bottles.

Eau de Toilette:

The Eau de Toilette is light in concentration and it is also sold in spray bottles. As the concentration of base perfume essence is very light, therefore you can spray it the way you want. Due to the high concentration of alcohol in Eau de Toilette, these fragrances do not last for long. If you are looking for a fragrance that you can wear regularly, then you should choose Eau de Toilette. In Eau de Toilette, the concentration level of pure perfume is very low which is approximately 4 to 5 percent.

Eau de Cologne:

Eau de Cologne is also known as Cologne and it was first introduced in the city of Cologne, Germany. In the category of eau de cologne, there are various types of fragrances added to create a unique fragrance. The Eau de cologne is light, fruity, and fresh. Most of the eau de Cologne consists of orange, bergamot, essential oils, lemon, and absolute neroli.

Sometimes, lavender and rosemary essential oils are also added to the Eau de cologne. Nowadays, Eau de Cologne is also used to check the fragrance of the most diluted version of the perfume. The Eau de cologne comprises 2 to 5 percent of base perfume essence. This type of scent is budget-friendly and perfect for young people who want a splash of perfume.

Final Words:

There is a specific region in our brain that is responsible for controlling our memories and emotions. Thus, fragrances or scents also create memories in our minds. While choosing the scent, you should make sure that it perfectly represents your personality. The process of choosing a perfume is not just based on the fragrance, but you should make sure people remember you with that fragrance.
